13 best ChatGPT prompts for product managers

At the intersection of product, marketing, engineering, and project management, a product manager's job is one of the most diverse in SaaS. So when it comes to using ChatGPT, the potential is endless.

There are plenty of great guides on using AI in product management. In this article, we want to go a little more practical and show some real prompts you can immediately start using. Below, we'll highlight some ChatGPT ideas to speed up your tasks, including example prompts you can ask ChatGPT.

Product discovery

ChatGPT can help with generating product ideas. Whether it's a new feature or a completely different product altogether, you generate product concepts with a few simple prompts.

1. Summarize complaints from online reviews

Online reviews contain a wealth of information. Whether it's your own software's reviews, or those of a competitor. Instead of manually reviewing thousands of reviews, you can ask ChatGPT to summarize what users are writing online.

Example prompt: "I'm building a recruitment management platform for hiring managers. What are the most common complaints about existing recruitment software online?"

2. Respond to changing market conditions

Economic recession, a global pandemic, technology advancements,... These are only a few examples of events that can change the dynamics between your product and its user. ChatGPT can give you some suggestions on how to cope with changing market conditions and enable your problem-solving thinking.

Example prompt: "I've built a vacation rental software platform. Due to the economic recession, flight prices have skyrocketed which is causing our users to hold off on traveling by air. Our offering caters mostly for long-distance, international travel. Which product features can I develop to ensure our software remains relevant to our audience in these changing market conditions?"

3. Competitor insights and market research for product managers

You can use ChatGPT to summarize competitor information you can find online. What would normally take ages to analyze and consolidate, you can now finish in mere minutes to get inspired.

Example prompt: "Below is a list of G2 profiles of project management software tools. Give me a summary of the top 5 product features that are mentioned most frequently in their product reviews."

Product development

Once you know which direction you want to take with your product, it's time to translate ideas into requirements and a product roadmap. This involves a lot of document drafting, and what better tool to assist with that process than a language model? Below are some prompts to help you get going.

4. Creating personas in product management

The best software product managers have a deep understanding of their user's needs, behaviors and motivations. And they effectively communicate it to their team members who are building or launching the product into the market.

Here's an example prompt to draft a user persona: "I'm building a marketing automation software that will be used by marketing executives, as well as junior email marketers and senior digital marketing managers. Create a user persona for these three users."

You can further refine the prompt with input from your own user interviews or documentation.

5. How to write product specifications

Likely, you already use a fixed template for your product specification sheets. Or if you're starting out, you'll want to create one to ensure all your specification docs are uniform. Simply give ChatGPT a list of your specifications and a structure it needs to follow for your output, and watch the magic happen.

Example prompt: "We are going to add a new feature to our customer success platform: an automated customer health scoring that tracks the health of each customer based on the following factors:

  • product usage
  • number of support tickets
  • customer feedback

Create a product specification sheet for this product feature using the following structure:

  1. What are we building?
  2. Why are we building it?
  3. What will this feature achieve?
  4. How will we measure success?
  5. What is the timeline for this feature?
  6. What are the risks?

{...}"

Add some raw input for each subheader of the product specification. The more context the language model has, the more useful your output will be.

6. Writing UX copy

If you're not creative with words, and you don't have a UX writer on the team yet, ChatGPT can help you get rid of the blank page. Ask for a first draft of your copy, and ask a marketer to spice things up. Or do it the other way around: provide some dry copy and ask ChatGPT to make it more concise, more fun, more catchy,... whatever you want!

Example prompt: "Below is the UX copy we will use to convince users to activate a higher pricing plan because they have hit their usage limit. Make the copy shorter and more conversion-driven."

Here's an example of what the input and output could look like.

Example of using ChatGPT for UX copywriting

Product launch

ChatGPT can be a creative soundboard during product launches. Or you can use it to save time on repeatable tasks.

7. Writing release notes

ChatGPT offers great support when sharing fact sheets with product marketing about upcoming releases. Input raw release notes or feature information, and get a coherent text in return. Your marketing colleagues will thank you!

Example prompt: “We will soon release a product with the following features. {provide raw product input}. Structure this information into a product fact sheet with the following outline:

  • Product description
  • Product benefits
  • Target audience
  • Pricing
  • How it works”

8. Come up with product name suggestions

Inventing a name for a product or feature can be a difficult process. Simply share a few requirements for the name and ask for 10-20 suggestions. You may not find the perfect name right away, but it will surely get your creative brain juice flowing!

Example prompt: “Give me 15 name suggestions for a new reporting and insights offering in our CRM software. Take into account the following requirements:

  • max X characters long
  • simple and easy to pronounce in {languages}
  • should be descriptive of {…}
  • should appeal to {your audience} -…”

Usage and user feedback

Analyzing user feedback can be a lengthy process. Especially when you get lots of feedback through multiple channels. With natural language processing tools like ChatGPT, you can automate this tedious task and focus on getting valuable insights.

9. Summarizing user feedback

If you want to make your user feedback more actionable, use this ChatGPT prompt to structure raw user feedback in a usable format.

Example prompt: “Below are 10 online reviews with customer feedback. Give a 150-character summary of each review that lists the main message or complaint of the review. Classify each review as positive, negative or neutral sentiment. Categorize the content of each review in the following categories: user experience, pricing, customer service, product. Provide your answers in a table format with a separate column for each of the criteria.”

You can expand the prompt with more columns and use the table as a CSV file. Throw it into a dashboarding tool, and get a high-level overview of the most common problems immediately!

10. Create reporting dashboards

Product usage and user feedback teach you a lot about your user needs. But it's difficult to make decisions based on rows and rows of raw data. Instead, you can leverage ChatGPT to create impactful data visualizations.

Example prompt: "I have a dataset with customer feedback data. It has the following schema: {...}. Make a list of the 6 most relevant charts to visualize."

Pro tip: if you want to automate this process, you can hook up the OpenAI API to your favorite BI tool and have it auto-create AI-powered dashboards for you.

11. Create FAQs for customer support

ChatGPT can also come up with frequently asked questions based on your raw user feedback. With a list of FAQs, your support team can efficiently handle recurring requests and spend more time on complex questions.

Example prompt: “Below is a list of customer support questions and responses from our support team. What are the 10 most commonly asked questions? Create an FAQ document with default responses based on our support team’s responses.”

12. Product validation

The sooner you can validate your product or feature with customers, the better. But if you're validating a complex feature with only wireframes, your customers may have a hard time seeing the value.

For smoother product validation, you can ask ChatGPT for some specific use cases for your customer's specific industry. These tangible scenarios will help your customers provide more relevant feedback.

Example prompt: "We are adding {a personalization layer} to our {email marketing software}. What are some use cases that {an online retailer / an AdTech software company / a local bakery} could use personalization for?"

13. Challenge your thinking

So far, we've covered a lot of examples that help you get started on a process, or complete tasks more efficiently. But the other way around, ChatGPT can also be a great sidekick to challenge your thinking. It can poke holes in your reasoning and uncover blind spots.

For example, let's say you're defining KPIs to measure the success of a new product feature. Feed your current proposal to ChatGPT and ask for feedback. It's great for sourcing new ideas, or aspects you may have overlooked.
